Ben Craven’s Monsters From The Id is one of the art-rock highlights of 2022. It’s a cinematic, immersive, and dynamic recording that reverentially combines classic progressive influences with songwriting that’s inspired by the here and now. Even more impressive is that the entirety of this ambitious effort was performed, engineered, and produced by Craven.
The album is constructed as two largely-instrumental 19-minute suites. They’re infused with mercurial twists and turns, blazing guitar and keyboard solos, and ornate, thought-provoking lyric passages that sound like they’re inspired by the cratering concerns challenging humanity, but with a hint of optimism about potential ways forward.
